Think your email has been compromised? Do this.

Emails get compromised all the time. Most commonly from Phishing scams, where credentials get typed into a non-legitimate website. The two signs of compromise are:
  • You are missing emails people say they sent you
  • Contacts report strange emails from you
Though this isn’t definitive, as these things can happen even without you being compromised. Missing emails is very common in the day to day, this happens all the time. Searching can be your friend there. As far as strange emails from you, it’s easy for anyone to spoof an email and make it show your name (and email if they’re complex enough).  To be truly definitive, you can check your sign in log and compare the IP addresses to your own at https://www.ipchicken.com . Note that cell phones may have out of state IP addresses, so that’s not always a need to worry. The things to look for are other country logins such as Nigeria, Russia and China. If you see something that’s not right, you can click the option next to the location and then click secure account. Google/Microsoft will walk you through steps. What you need to do if you find logins that aren't yours is:
  1. Change your password
  2. Use the option to sign out all other sessions
  3. Enable 2 Factor / Multi Factor authentication

  4. Open your email and look at the filters/rules. Delete any that are set to forward or hide email.
